Description and Purpose: 

The 2006 strategic plan at Duke University, Making a Difference, upholds diversity as a core value of our institution. Not only does diversity at our university best prepare our students for a global world, a robust learning environment can occur only when people of different backgrounds, races, ethnic groups and experiences are brought together to
exchange ideas. Duke recognizes that we need to continue our efforts to enhance diversity in our student and faculty populations, as well as in leadership positions. To that end, the Provost has created the Provost's Postdoctoral Program, with competitive postdoctoral research appointments for two years. The goal of the program is to increase the diversity of scholars who have potential for becoming tenure track faculty at Duke University or peer institutions, particularly in fields where there are fewer women and/or underrepresented minorities. Postdoctoral awardees are expected to devote their full efforts to research, and may teach a maximum of one course per year.

Eligibility:
Completion of doctoral degree between July 1, 2007 and July 1, 2010. The Program is limited to US citizens and permanent residents. Academic excellence, prior record of accomplishments, potential to bring diverse ideas to Duke University and to interact successfully with a broad range of differences among faculty and students, and the identification and willingness of the sponsoring mentor, will form the major selection criteria.

Fields of Discipline:
Any discipline available at Duke University, but preference will be given to those where other options for postdoctoral funding are limited.

Appointment and Salary:
Individuals will be appointed as Postdoctoral Associates (see Postdoctoral Policy at http://www.postdoc.duke.edu/policies.html), and should be prepared to start the position between July 1 and August 31. Salary will be based on the NIH recommended postdoctoral salaries commensurate with the experience of the candidate. An additional $5000 will be available to enhance the research experience, such as travel, registration and expenses associated with attending professional meetings or workshops, membership dues for professional societies, and journal subscriptions.

All materials must be postmarked by January 15, 2010, and will not be returned to the applicant. Incomplete submissions will not be accepted. All candidates will be notified of our decisions no later than March 15, 2010.

Cover letter to include: personal statement of the applicant's reasons for
applying and potentially for selection; a declaration that the applicant is a
US citizen or permanent resident; the candidate's (anticipated) date of PhD;
and name of Duke mentor(s)
Curriculum vitae
Statement of research plans and goals
Sample publications and/or dissertation materials
Supporting letter from the proposed mentor(s) at Duke University
Three letters of recommendation. Recommendation letters may accompany the
application in separate sealed envelopes, signed by the author of the letter,
or may be mailed directly to us by the person recommending the candidate.
