Position Title: Clinical Counselor with subspecialty in alcohol and other drugs

Position # A1000325

Nature of Position:
This Clinical Counselor position combines generalist clinical counseling duties with a significant subspecialty in alcohol and other drug assessment, intervention and outreach. Along with the clinical and outreach responsibilities described below, this person will serve in the Alcohol and Other Drug Office (AODO) and will also assume a key role in delivery and implementation of AOD psychoeducational, prevention, and outreach efforts. This individual will function under the supervision of the AODO Coordinator.

The Alcohol and Other Drug Office is a student fee-based, confidential service provided to students and administered through the Counseling Center. It provides comprehensive services including assessment, referral, counseling, prevention, and outreach services. The Office also maintains collaborative relationships with other agencies at the campus, local and state levels. The Alcohol and Other Drug Office’s mission identifies the health, safety and academic success of students as its primary goal. As a clinical counselor assigned to this setting, the emphasis will be on supporting that mission and providing creative, high quality, comprehensive assessment, counseling, and referral services to a large and diverse student population.

The successful candidate will be a well-rounded and energetic professional who works comfortably both individually and as a team member in providing effective programs. Excellent organizational and leadership skills are required. Demonstrated ability in working with a range of college students is preferred. Understanding of state, local, community and campus issues as they relate to alcohol and other drugs is strongly desired. Also important is an ability to provide leadership in the area of emphasis while working collaboratively with other Counseling Center staff.

The UIUC Counseling Center is a networked computer environment with extensive use of electronic technology for scheduling, records, and internal communication and web based technology for programming and promotion. The successful candidate will need to have the capability of working in such an environment

Specific duties and responsibilities for alcohol and other drug work may include, but are not limited to the following:

1. Active participation in conducting alcohol and other drug clinical assessments, clinical counseling, AOD groups and referral of students for appropriate level of care.

2. Participate in campus wide committees that assist in the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of alcohol and other drug services for students across campus.

3. Assist in the ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of the Mandatory Assessment Program for alcohol and other drug incapacitation.

4. Assist with the training and supervision of the graduate assistants for the Alcohol and Other Drug Office.

5. Provide consultations and liaisons with University departments as they relate to alcohol and other drugs.

6. Assist in the maintenance of AODO records as they relate to Quality Assurance.

7. Assist in supervision and training activities for paraprofessional, interns, and volunteers.

8. Provide leadership (as assigned) on state, local, community and campus committees as they relate to student alcohol and other drug issues.

As a generalist clinical counselor specific duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

1. Provide assessment and psychotherapy for individuals and couples.

2. Provide group counseling and psychotherapy.

3. Participate in University emergency efforts.

4. Participate in other (non-alcohol related) outreach, training, and treatment team activities.

5. Participate in various Student Affairs activities and committees.

6. Other duties as assigned.

As the one of the key clinicians for alcohol and other drug services, duties may include, but are not limited to:

1. Assist in designing and facilitating outreach and psychoeducational workshops for student groups.

2. Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of prevention programs focused on risk factors related to alcohol and other drug use.

3. Participate in freshmen alcohol orientation efforts.

4. Provide training and consultation to campus and community referral sources as it relates to student access to assessments, counseling and referrals.

5. Assist in the coordination and evaluation of ongoing alcohol, marijuana and polysubstance educational workshops (CAAP, MIC, SAW).

6. Participate in the maintenance of AOD clinical, outreach, psychoeducation and consultation records.

7. Maintain ongoing communication and collaboration with other Student Affairs units with regard to alcohol and other drug services.

Qualifications:

1. Masters degree in Clinical, Clinical/Community, Counseling Psychology, Social Work or related advanced degree is required. Doctorate in Clinical, Clinical/Community, Counseling Psychology, or related field is preferred (ABD considered).

2. License in Illinois or license eligible background as a Psychologist, Social Worker or Clinical Counselor is required.

3. Demonstrated experience, expertise and interest in clinical and outreach work in the area of alcohol and other drugs is required.

4. Demonstrated ability to function at a high level as a clinical counselor in a setting with both diverse clients and colleagues is required.

5. Demonstrated ability to develop, coordinate, and provide educational services in the area of alcohol and other drugs is required.

6. Previous experience in a college-counseling center strongly preferred.

Conditions:

1. Starting date: August 2, 2010 or mutually acceptable date thereafter;

2. Appointment terms: 12-months with 24 working days vacation; full time, regular position
