Doctoral Student - Someone beginning their career in a specific area of scholarship as a PhD student (with a minimum of two years completed), or as a doctoral candidate in a recognized program.

Early Career Scholar - Someone who has graduated from a doctoral program within the last 9 years. Applicants may hold a non-tenured faculty position as an assistant or associate professor; or serve as a research assistant at an institution of higher learning.

Mid-Career Scholar - An associate or assistant professor that has held an appointment for at least 10 years that may or may not have been granted tenure status; or a research associate at a research institution/organization. Mid-Career Scholars are eligible to mentor Early Career Scholars.

Senior Career Scholar - A faculty member who currently holds a tenured position as a full professor; an associate professor with 20+ years experience; or someone who serves as a senior research associate at a research institution/organization. As a Senior Career Scholar
you are also eligible to mentor Early Career Scholars.

Affiliates - An individual or organizational representative who has information and resources that can help connect ESIN Scholars to professional opportunities that advance their research and their careers. Most Affiliates use ESIN as a clearing house for posting job announcements, training opportunities, and calls for proposals.
